Interview with Johannes Len\u00dfen, Senior Manager in the System Landscape Transformation practice<\/h2>\n

The System Landscape Transformation (SLT)<\/a> practice team guides large organizations through complex transformation programs, from the initial concept to final implementation.<\/span><\/span> But what does the work actually look like in this environment?<\/span><\/span> And how does a career develop in a field focused on the interrelationships between data, processes, and system landscapes?<\/span><\/span> We spoke about this with Johannes Len\u00dfen<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span> He has been part of the SLT team at cbs for ten years and currently serves as a Senior Manager.<\/span><\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n

Johannes, how did you originally get into the SLT field?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I studied industrial engineering and subsequently started working at a small IT consultancy.<\/span><\/span> That\u2019s where I gained my first experience with SAP, databases, SQL, and analytics.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However, I hadn’t had any exposure to data migrations back then.<\/span><\/span> Even so, my profile was a great fit for the SLT field.<\/span><\/span> Many of the things that engaged me back then \u2014 analyzing data, understanding interrelationships, solving technical problems \u2014 still play a major role in my work today.<\/span><\/span> I was particularly drawn to the combination of project-based work, technical depth, and large-scale transformation initiatives.<\/span><\/span> That is exactly why I joined cbs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You are a Senior Manager today.<\/span><\/span> How has your role evolved over the years?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I started as a consultant and took on project responsibility early on.<\/span><\/span> Over the years, additional tasks were added \u2014 ranging from architecture and design issues to team leadership and mentoring.<\/span><\/span> At the same time, I still work closely with the projects today.<\/span><\/span> The exciting thing is that the role is constantly evolving.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What makes working in the SLT field special for you?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

For me, it is primarily the combination of variety and a holistic approach.<\/span><\/span> No two projects are alike.<\/span><\/span> Whether it\u2019s an S\/4HANA transformation, a carve-out, a harmonization effort, or a cloud project, every starting situation brings its own unique challenges.<\/span><\/span> Naturally, our focus in these projects is on data, processes, and applications.<\/span><\/span> However, it is important not to think in terms of isolated SAP functionalities, but rather to keep dependencies, interfaces, interrelationships between systems, and the entire system landscape in view.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Over time, you develop a very broad understanding of transformations.<\/span><\/span> You learn how data, processes, technology, infrastructure, and organizational changes interact.<\/span><\/span> It is precisely this mix of technical depth, diverse projects, and a focus on the big picture that makes the work so exciting for me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who do you work with on projects like these?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The range is broad.<\/span><\/span> On the client side, you work with business departments, IT teams, project managers, and management stakeholders.<\/span><\/span> Internally, you coordinate with colleagues from various specialist areas.<\/span><\/span> This allows you to gain insight into many different perspectives and broaden your horizons well beyond specific subject areas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What skills are particularly important for success in this environment?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Analytical thinking and a strong grasp of logic are essential.<\/span><\/span> Many issues in the SLT environment resemble complex puzzles: you analyze interrelationships, develop solutions, and verify that everything fits together seamlessly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

However, communication, personal accountability, and a willingness to take active responsibility are just as important.<\/span><\/span> To drive projects forward successfully, you need to address issues transparently, share information, and collaborate effectively with a wide range of people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You now support colleagues in their own professional development.<\/span><\/span> What does that look like in practice?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Mentoring is a key part of my role.<\/span><\/span> For instance, when colleagues take on their first project management responsibilities, I support them from the background as a sounding board.<\/span><\/span> We regularly discuss challenges, client requirements, or project situations and jointly consider the best next steps.<\/span><\/span> At the same time, it is important that the colleagues themselves remain visible and take ownership.<\/span><\/span> My goal is not to take tasks off their hands, but to foster their development.<\/span><\/span> Incidentally, this is exactly the kind of culture I have experienced at cbs for many years.<\/span><\/span> People are given opportunities to take on responsibility and grow through their tasks.<\/span><\/span> At the same time, there are always experienced colleagues on hand to provide support whenever it is needed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You have been part of the SLT team for ten years now.<\/span><\/span> What is it about your work that still excites you today?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Even after ten years, no two days are alike.<\/span><\/span> The work remains diverse and varied because projects, clients, and challenges are constantly changing.<\/span><\/span> At the same time, cbs has always given me the opportunity to grow professionally and take on new areas of responsibility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For me, this is an environment that fosters long-term growth.<\/span><\/span> Professional development isn’t just talked about \u2014 <\/span>it is actively encouraged.<\/span><\/span> If you show interest, want to take on responsibility, and are open to new topics, you get the chance to shape your own career path.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
