How Selective Data Transition (SDT) Delivers Real Added Value to Businesses

Companies face the challenge of future-proofing their SAP system landscapes. This isn’t just about technology. It’s about developing systems to meet future business requirements, unlock new opportunities, and keep risks manageable. In this way, companies create the foundation for a future-proof enterprise architecture that follows the principles of the Agentic Enterprise and supports SAP’s vision of a flexible, self-managing organization.

A successful S4HANA transformation doesn’t follow a rigid blueprint: It must be individually tailored to the company’s strategy, existing systems and processes, and organizational circumstances. Selective Data Transition (SDT) provides companies with a strategic tool to implement this individual transformation path effectively.

What is Selective Data Transition (SDT)?

Selective Data Transition (SDT) is an approach that gives companies the freedom to decide precisely which data, processes, and systems are migrated, which are adapted, and which are deliberately left behind when migrating to S/4HANA. Unlike a classic greenfield approach (new implementation) or a purely technical system conversion (brownfield), the transformation is gradual, targeted, and value-oriented. SDT enables the migration to be managed in such a way that existing processes remain protected, business operations continue smoothly, and systems are optimally prepared for future requirements. This approach considers more than just the technology: SDT combines strategic planning, process adaptation, and data migration into an integrated, business-oriented approach.

Three successful transformation paths for different business situations

In practice, it turns out that there is no single right transformation path. SDT allows for different approaches to be pursued depending on the objectives and complexity of the organization. The following examples illustrate this:

  1. Fast-Value Transformation:

Kemira aimed to implement a global digital platform in S/4HANA Private Cloud. The project encompassed the entire organization and all business processes worldwide. Starting with a robust ERP template, the goal was to build a future-proof, scalable, and efficient system that optimally leverages new digital opportunities. In just 15 months, a big-bang live migration of 60 company codes and 400 PLs was successfully implemented, including the integration of six on-premise interfaces and solutions such as DataSphere and SAP Analytics Cloud. This example demonstrates that with a clear strategy and SDT, even large, complex transformations can be implemented quickly and predictably.

  1. Wave-Based Approach:

Not every company transforms everything at once. Blanc & Fischer aimed to digitize end-to-end business processes and build a harmonized, standardized global organization. The transformation was divided into smaller, organizational waves, each with its own timeline. This allowed innovations to be introduced gradually while day-to-day operations continued smoothly. For example, the first wave involved implementing a greenfield financial approach while logistics continued to operate almost without interruption. The project encompassed 24 countries, two digital innovation platforms, and a central master data system. This approach demonstrates how SDT offers maximum flexibility for complex, multi-stage transformations.

  1. Plateau-Based Transformation

The project at Dr. Oetker illustrates how an older ERP system can be modernized incrementally. The approach began with a financial transformation, in which processes and data were harmonized and standardized. This allowed the program to reach an initial stable innovation plateau, from which the next steps could be built. Subsequently, two legacy ERP systems were merged into a single S/4 system. The big-bang go-live encompassed 99 company codes in 30 countries, with extremely low technical downtime of only 48 hours. The coordinated plateaus enabled the gradual introduction of innovation, reduced risks, and ensured stability.

The Advantages of SDT for Companies

Real-world examples demonstrate that SDT creates measurable added value. It enables companies to implement transformations according to their individual requirements in a controlled and flexible manner. In summary, the following advantages emerge:

  • Minimal business interruption: Day-to-day operations continue while the transformation takes place step by step. Downtime is deliberately reduced to the necessary minimum.
  • Targeted data migration: Only relevant data is transferred; legacy data is intentionally omitted. This reduces complexity and risks.
  • Transparency and control: Through continuous validation and clear governance structures, companies always know where they stand in the project. Compliance, quality, and business continuity are guaranteed.
  • Software-supported implementation: With the standardized transformation software ET Enterprise Transformer, migration and transformation are efficiently automated, processes are adapted, and data is reliably migrated.
  • Flexibility in implementation: SDT allows the choice between a Fast-Value, Wave-Based, or Plateau approach, depending on the company structure, objectives, and risk tolerance.
  • Business-oriented transformation: Technology is not viewed in isolation, but rather as an enabler for optimizing processes, decision-making, and future competitiveness.

With SDT, S/4HANA migration can be flexibly and precisely tailored to a company’s specific situation, without downtime, unnecessary risks, and with a clear focus on business value. This selective approach transforms the pressure of transformation into an opportunity: Companies strategically manage their systems, modernize processes, and create a future-proof enterprise architecture.
